There are two months I absolutely love as a business owner: January and June.

January is that fresh-start energy. Everything feels new. Possibility is in the air. You set goals, make plans, and temporarily forget how chaotic Q4 was.

Then there's June.

June means summer is here, and suddenly everyone is planning vacations and signing off early on Fridays. Things slow down—in a good way. And I’ve found that’s exactly when the real magic happens behind the scenes.

If January is for dreaming, June is for refining.
It’s the perfect time to work on your business instead of just in it.

And one of the best places to start?

Your website.

Because let’s be honest: if "update website" was on your January to-do list… and still hasn’t been checked off… it’s not going to magically cross itself off.

Here are 4 website upgrades you can tackle now to carry momentum into the rest of the year—and walk into Q3 & Q4  like the confident business owner you are.

1. Add Movement: Video, Animations, or Subtle Scroll Effects

Let’s face it—static websites are the digital equivalent of a beige waiting room.

Your website shouldn’t just inform visitors. It should engage them.

Adding a touch of motion—whether it’s a background video, smooth scroll effects, or even a well-placed GIF—can increase the time someone stays on your site by as much as 88% (thanks, Forbes).

💡 Pro Tip: Use movement with intention. A few subtle animations go a long way. You’re not trying to make your website look like Times Square.

2. Human-Led, Personality-Driven Copy

In the age of AI, what people really want is a human.

And that human is you.

Your website copy should sound like someone you’d actually want to work with—not like a legal disclaimer or a robot that swallowed a thesaurus.

If your “About” page reads like a resume from 2011, or your homepage opens with “Welcome to our website,” it’s time for an edit.

💬 A good rule of thumb? If you wouldn’t say it out loud, don’t type it on your website.

3. Check In With Your SEO (It’s Not Set-It-and-Forget-It)

If you're one of my website care clients, you know we live in the data. But even if you’re DIY-ing it, now’s a great time to log into Google Analytics or Search Console and take stock.

What's working?
What pages are getting traffic?
What could use a little love (or a full-blown rewrite)?

Update your meta titles, descriptions, and internal links. Revisit blog posts that are still relevant but might need fresher keywords or a stronger CTA.

Not sure what those things even are? Start with Where Are You Showing Up in Google? or What the Google Algorithm Leak Means for Your Website. Both offer actionable tips without making you feel like you’re studying for an exam.

If you’re one of our monthly website care clients—good news, we’re already tracking this for you and sending updates each month. 🙌

4. Prioritize Mobile (No Excuses)

Mobile-first design isn’t new… but it’s never been more important.

More than 61% of users are likely to make a purchase or submit an inquiry if your website is mobile-friendly. And mobile traffic is only going up in 2025.

So if your website still loads like it’s on dial-up, or if your buttons are so tiny they require surgical precision to click… we need to talk.

Mobile-first design means:

  • Legible fonts (no zooming required)
  • Tap-friendly buttons
  • Lightning-fast load speeds
  • Layouts that look just as good on a phone as they do on desktop

If your site isn’t there yet, it’s not a lost cause—it’s a great mid-year project.

BONUS: Update Your Portfolio

You’ve been doing incredible work—are you actually showing it off?

Updating your portfolio or project gallery not only gives new visitors a reason to trust you, but it also:

  • Adds fresh content to your site (great for SEO!)
  • Gives Google more pages to crawl and index
  • Helps potential clients see what you’re about

I can’t tell you how many times people choose to work with someone simply because they saw a project that resonated. So if your last case study is from 2021… it’s time.

Not sure what to say in a project description? We’ve got a whole series of web design projects on our site that do just that—short, strategic, and full of visual proof.
